Once Again to Hold You Tight
Just once again to hold you tight,
Embrace like we did that first night.
Cradled together with your
Head on my chest. Naked,
We’d lie for hours talking About fabled futures; dreams of
Where we might be in 40 or 50 years.
It hasn’t been nearly that long,
And even the journey to now
Has been different than we thought
Possible. But sleep easy.
I’ll watch over you diligently
For our lives’ length until
You awake in a far distant land.
I’ll be but a wisp of memory to you.
Just know I’ll follow quick as I can
And grasp your hand.
Then you’ll remember, and we’ll
Hold each other again
Like we did that first night.
Only now, we’ll never have to let go.
We’ll be old, but we’ll have
Strength enough.
